“Most of us go blithely about our daily preoccupations until a crisis or some vague internal stirring stops us long enough to focus our attention on the need to discover the deeper meaning in our lives.” Stephanie Marston
Living the life we truly want doesn’t just happen. It takes intentionality and the focusing of our attention.
Author Théun Mares says if we’re going to succeed as a warrior in life we can’t afford to waste our personal power by living a helter-skelter existence. I’m not sure if I agree with describing the journey of life from the position of warrior. However, there’s a greater possibility of creating the life we desire by being attentive and intentional.
We need to persistently focus our attention on the intention of our views, feelings, thoughts and actions.
For instance, we might wake up with a feeling of ‘blah’ we can’t explain. If we take a moment to focus our attention and sense where that feeling is residing – like a nagging worry in the pit of our stomachs about an upcoming job interview or meeting – we trace the murky and unclear feeling of ‘blah’ to its source. Only then can we begin to clarify what our ‘intention’ is behind the feeling of ‘worried’ and make the switch to intentionally thinking and feeling in a way that will support us moving forward in a positive way. We might begin to see the benefit of gaining experience and feedback from the job interview, no matter what the outcome. We may see how having that difficult meeting will pave the way to clarity and moving forward.
It’s vital through this process that we remember to also focus on our attitude. We need to stay non-judgmental or critical of what arises within us. Without self-acceptance and compassion our inner voice may shut off communication with the part of us attempting to free us from the feelings and thoughts blocking us from living the life we desire.
Our willingness to continually be attentive to our intention of each thought, word and deed will greatly enhance the richness and depth of our learning.
Expressing our authentic self in the world, moment to moment, takes attentive care, which is sometimes easier said than done. However, consciously focused intentional attention will reap the benefits of living the life we want through our tenacious efforts; even though sometimes we’ll fall off the wagon.
Living the life we want is about taking the nuggets of learning one step at a time.
To live our highest potential and create the life we truly desire, it’s vital to focus our attention and listen to the messages we’re attempting to give ourselves.
Whether these messages come in the heat of anger, the joy of creation, the exhilaration of silence, the quiet loving voice of our heart, interactions with others or the solitude of our own space, one thing is for sure – we become an expression of life’s highest possible potential by evolving the focus of our attention.
Through focused attention we live life with intention.
